Poetry Lab

Big Poetry Lab Callout

In the Poetry Lab, students form a writing circle, in which they use creative writing, poetry, hip hop and spoken word performance as a means of articulating their experience.

By participating in The Poetry Lab, students…

  • Investigate themes of respect and tolerance through exposure to culturally diverse poetry that highlights the voices of marginalized people.
  • Increase confidence, interest, and willingness to write.
  • Learn the basic elements of poetry.
  • Develop new vocabulary.
  • Gain a sense of belonging as they develop a sense of trust with peers in the group.
  • Increase comfort in reading their writing out loud in front of peers.

Examples of Achievements

  • Poetry anthology published twice yearly.
  • Spoken word poetry CD, compiled and produced by students.
  • Public readings for parents and community members.
  • Participating students are given personal journals to spark writing out-of-school.
