Poetry Lab

In the Poetry Lab, students form a writing circle, in which they use creative writing, poetry, hip hop and spoken word performance as a means of articulating their experience.
By participating in The Poetry Lab, students…
- Learn to use creative writing, journaling and poetry as a healthy coping strategy.
- Investigate themes of respect and tolerance through exposure to culturally diverse poetry that highlights the voices of marginalized people.
- Increase confidence, interest, and willingness to write.
- Learn the basic elements of poetry.
- Develop new vocabulary.
- Gain a sense of belonging as they develop a sense of trust with peers in the group.
- Increase comfort in reading their writing out loud in front of peers.
Examples of Achievements
- Poetry anthology published twice yearly.
- Spoken word poetry CD, compiled and produced by students.
- Public readings for parents and community members.
- Participating students are given personal journals to spark writing out-of-school.
