We here at The LAB would like to say a huge congratulations to all of our incredible students who shared their unique gifts and talents at yesterday’s showcase. Here is a small video sampling of what’s been going on here in the past few weeks. Have a great spring break everybody!

Listen up! At any given time, The LAB plays host to a variety of mentorships where passionate and skilled volunteers and guest artists work one on one with our gifted and talented students.

The following reflection and radio interview is from our VISTA Jason Rodney and his mentorship with one of these students:

This young man and I have worked together since October, doing photography, video production, and now radio interviews! Our mentorship gives us a moment each week to learn from whatever else is going on in our lives – whether it’s good relationships developing at home, or a frustrating experience that morning.  We are learning from each other about how to be the people we want to be.

At the same time, we’re using technology to create something original, and gaining confidence every step of the way.  Even for the most outgoing people, it takes courage to record something and share it with your peers.  So I’m very proud of this young man for putting his voice in the world.

Enjoy this interview with Glo, a mentor to us both, and a role model of how confidence paired with compassion can change the world.

Here are some student creations from our latest CD for your listening pleasure. Enjoy!

Bad Dream

Time…

Shine

Before I came to The LAB, I had never thought of myself as a poet. I like to write, but I had always stuck to term papers and journal entries as my outlets. On my first day of orientation, Mary had us each write a poem based on a prompt phrase. My world was rocked. I surprised myself with how easy the words flowed from my pen to the paper, beamed with pride as I read it aloud, and listened with intrigue as my peers shared theirs. Through that exercise, I understood immediately what the Poetry Lab was all about because it worked on me—I left that day feeling proud of my accomplishment, excited about a new creative outlet and hopeful for tomorrow. This year The Lab would like to extend a very heartfelt welcome to our new friend and guest artist Patrick Pegg! Patrick is a local hip hop artist, beat maker, MC and all around all-star who has worked in the local punk rock and hip hop scene for the past ten years. He is our guest artist for our enrichments this semester and teaches a writing/beatology workshop. Pat also runs an after school program at the Neighborhood House on the west side. So if you came to The Lab and liked what you saw, hit him up over there too! Stay tuned for a sound bite of one of Pat’s rhymes!

As I Step Through The Door

There is no art on earth more beautiful than the art of people from different backgrounds, nationalities, beliefs and cultures coming together to paint one beautiful picture for the uplifting of us all through “OUR” children.  The Lab has been blessed to receive a new team of dedicated, passionate, and caring individuals who have come together to further the vision of children operating at their best by exploring potential.  “As I Walk Through the Door” is collective audio poem featuring the entire Lab team. It paints a poetic picture of how they feel about coming to the Lab. Our  hopes, dreams, thoughts and aspirations.  A beautiful picture indeed!   Welcome the LAB! ~ Glo
