I’m thrilled that this year, we have added 2 new activities in the Wellness Lab. Jordan, one of the Social Work Interns has been creating and hosting one-to-one mentorships teaching youth Bike Repair. We have also been lucky to welcome Marc Anderson (www.fathands.com) and Marisa from the Women’s Drum Center (www.womensdrumcenter.org) have been facilitating African Drum Circles. We are proud to be developing and offering youth many ways to manage emotions, find healthy ways to cope with life and discovering and developing their talents.

The Women’s Drum Center @ The Lab!

We are so lucky to have Marisa from The Women’s Drum Center with us at The Lab. Today, Marisa facilitated a girls drumming group for our t River East students and it was a great success.

The girls were open to this experience, willing to take risks, and connected respectfully and collaboratively as they created their new drum circle. We learned about and played 2 styles of African Drums called Djembe drums and ponlogo drums. We learned to play the 3 main drum tones called Bass, Tone & Touch, and we learned and played 2 distinct rhythms, with one set of students holding one rhythm, and the other set of students adding a second rhythm. VERY FUN! We all had a great feeling of concentration and mastery! More to come in the world of African Drumming…..

Youth Poetry!

HOPE
Can’t see what,
Can’t see how
As a kid,
I always wanted it NOW
I just want to be successful
with wealth and health
But now these obstacles and troubles along the way
There’s no way I’ll get there that way
Hope a simple concept, yet misused
I hope to live a cartoon life,
a simple life, maybe get a wife
But before I do, so much stuff to do
Improve my skills,
drawing is my profession…writing too
Do it all day, maybe all night,
do it all over ‘till I get it right
Hope to reach my goals,
be happy and free
But I just continue to strive and hope
I’ll be the best I can be~ Harding Poet
Still Missing You
I’ll still miss you
even though you passed when I was three
and Mama can’t keep the family strong.
But like Grandma says,
“Everything happens for a reason.”
So I filled my ‘dad’ spot for my mother and brothers
and I still do to this day.
See, some say I have no heart ‘cause I show no feeling
but on the inside I’m hurt, in pain,
just like everybody else.
But I am still happy
with my head held high!~ W. 7th Poet
