St. Andrew’s Youth Rock The Poetry LAB
Filed Under Lab Stories, poetry | Comments Off
Today, we began a new 7-week Poetry Lab group with 4 youth from St. Andrew’s. I can’t tell you what a great group it was. I shared a video clip of a Spoken Word Poet named “Sekou the Misfit”. This man’s poem was called “When I Write a Rhyme”. He spoke rhythmically and powerfully about all of the good that comes into his life when he writes. He spoke clearly and directly about all of the negativity that is kept at bay when he writes. The youth were inspired by his performance, his style and his words, and quickly, they set off immediately to write their own poetry. Enjoy a sampler of what these young poets wrote today.
When I Write My Rhymes
When I write my rhymes
it occupies my mind.
I would be in these streets
all day and all night. When I write my rhymes
it occupies my mind
it stops me from spending my money on dimesMy rhymes keep me up
because there’s things I need to get off my mind~ K

This year The Lab would like to extend a very heartfelt welcome to our new friend and guest artist Patrick Pegg! Patrick is a local hip hop artist, beat maker, MC and all around all-star who has worked in the local punk rock and hip hop scene for the past ten years. He is our guest artist for our enrichments this semester and teaches a writing/beatology workshop. Pat also runs an after school program at the Neighborhood House on the west side. So if you came to The Lab and liked what you saw, hit him up over there too! Stay tuned for a sound bite of one of Pat’s rhymes!

Spinning at The Lab!
Filed Under Lab Stories | Comments Off
Check out our new Donors Choose fundraising project we have currently posted. We are fundraising to hire a great resource, Kathy Flaminio, to facilitate an exciting new group offering at The Lab – SPINNING! Kathy is the owner of 1000 Petals (www.1000-petals.com).
Once this project is funded, Kathy will take our youth on a journey of self-discovery in the world of spinning on the bike. She will encourage youth to test their limits, persevere when the challenge gets physically tough, and bridge these concepts to the challenges we face in every day life. Kathy will help our youth integrate their minds, body and & heart.
