On M.’s first day in the studio, the atmosphere is laid back, cool and quiet. He and Lab intern, Kama, sit down to an informal lunch of sloppy joes, chips and peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches on sliced bread as thick as hockey pucks. Even though this is their first meeting, it seems like they have been working together for months. They slap hands like old friends and begin trading ideas for what will soon become their first radio podcast.

“I’m my own person,” explained M. “The only people that inspire me are my mom and my dad. It’s hard to get inspired by rap artists these days, because all they talk about is killing and guns.”

“I’m not nervous about being on-air,” M. said. “I love talking and asking questions.” Neither M., R. or Kama have previous experience hosting a radio show or being on the radio for that matter, but they are both excited about the opportunity.  Glo has experience hosting a tv show back in the day called “Don’t Believe the Hype”, as well as extensive performance experience, and confidently takes the driver’s seat for now at the keyboard, directing the recording and editing process. Over time, this will be a shared duty among the youth co-hosts.

The Recording Studio, where the Youth Radio Show is recorded“This radio show is important because it’s a way of showing progress to students who are listening as well as participating,” said Kama. “The show will give students an opportunity to do something that is creative and meaningful to them.”

“I’m my own person,” explained M. “The only people that inspire me are my mom and my dad. It’s hard to get inspired by rap artists these days, because all they talk about is killing and guns.” M. said he looks forward to using the student-driven podcast as a means for influencing kids his age to do the right thing.
