Ginny BrodeenGinny Brodeen  has been volunteering with The Lab since the fall of 2008 and has quickly become a household name with many students. She excels in her ability to teach and mentor students in The Visual Art Lab and challenges students to think outside of the box, or in this case, to color outside of the lines.

“I love the great artists that I work / play with every Tuesday,” said Brodeen, “I get to see them challenge themselves and try new things. I also learn a lot from them about challenges, patience and their own exciting lives.”

Brodeen uses books, reading and group discussions as a means of getting to know students. She has students examine different types of illustrations in pictures books and then talk about noticing things in the world that influence their art. “One of our goals is to have fun and try new things,” said Brodeen.

While working with Brodeen, students work on art projects that involve collaging, pencil drawing, watercolor pencil drawing, watercolor painting, cartooning, and acrylic painting.

Brodeen is not only an artist, but is also a retired librarian and spearheaded a fieldtrip to the Rondo Community Outreach Library in St. Paul last semester. On top of getting a private tour of the library during closed hours students had the chance to view art, learn about technology and even had a few minutes at the end to pick out a book or DVD and check it out on their own.

Among other things, Brodeen constantly goes above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that The Lab is an environment where success is not based on artistic prowess but more so on the ability and confidence that students gain from learning how to express themselves.

Brodeen has been a constant presence at The Lab and continues to enlighten and inspire students with her unique art projects, positive encouragement and contagious charisma.
Thank you Ginny Brodeen, for all of your amazing contributions!
