With just a few weeks left in our first semester at Homecroft, Thanksgiving break behind us and Winter break up ahead, there is a lot to celebrate around here. We have had entire EBD programs come 12 times for Enrichments to see and work with 5 different guest artists and 17 volunteers over the course of two months. Alongside Glorius Martin, aka Glo, of the Abstract Pack, and Tish Jones, of Tru Art Speaks, we have had Dave Scherer, aka Agape, of Hip Hop Outreach, as well as Desdamona and Terrell Woods, aka Carnage, of the two-person spoken word/beatboxing/hip hop group, Ill Chemistry perform for and mentor students at the Enrichments. The end of the semester celebrations for each program will be happening here, at The Lab, next week to showcase all the accomplishments.

The 6th volume of The Lab’s Poetry Chapbook just hit the presses today, to be out in two weeks! It will feature poetry, raps, photopgraphy and art all created by students at the Enrichments and in individual Poetry Labs hosted here at Homecroft.
We’re also working on a compilation CD of recorded poems, raps, and music made by students at our Enrichments, Poetry Labs, and here for internships and residencies.
Speaking of internships and residencies, we have 8 students that come to The Lab @ Homecroft every week in the afternoon. Students get this time to work on personal goals or artistic projects, help out around The Lab as student mentors, and recieve academic and mental health support.
Some of the projects include cooking, graffiti art, music, writing, photography, Shaolin Kenpo (a martial arts based self-defense and fitness practice), and creating a library catalog for The Lab’s many poetry, art, and educational books.
Coming up this week, two students are planning a bake-off to see who can make the best cupcake, the girls self-defense group will work toward earning their purple stripe in Shaolin Kenpo, and students will come to rehearse their poetry, raps and dance moves for our celebrations next week.
