Steppin’!
Filed Under Mary's Blog | Leave a Comment
I just had the most uplifting experience with some of our Lab Volunteers (Kristen, Trisha, Rachel), Interns (Becca and Patrick) and Lab colleagues (Mallory, Georgia and her daughter, and Lynn from Highland Jr High and her 2 kids), and I decided to post my thoughts about it.

Poetry Lab (Highland Park Junior Poet)

Poetry lab,
yeah that’s the thing
if you don’t go to it
then you’re very lame
you gotta speak your mind
and stay on time
be sure you find
your thing.
I’m talking finding
bigger
better
more precious things,
cuz poetry lab
is where I’m staying.

Blue Eyes (Highland Park Junior Poet)

Blue eyes she wish were her own
Standin’ in the mirror lookin’ at herself
Tall, thick, brown with long nappy hair
Blue eyes she wish were her own
Starin’ at the little white girl across the hall
Wanting to be her friend
But doesn’t know if she can

To be Remembered (West 7th Poet)

I don’t wanna be remembered for
how many people I killed
or how many I hurt
I wanna be remembered
about the words
that made kids
have a change of heart.

Who’s Gonna Help? (Central Poet)
Filed Under poetry | Leave a Comment
Who’s gonna help the people who ain’t got homes
Livin under bridges, tryin to survive on their own
No phone, so how they gonna get help when they get hurt?
Suspect got away, that’s just makin their life worse
If I could, I would help out the homeless citizens
People walk by them every day like they ain’t even existin’
They’re beggin, askin’ for money from dawn to the night
I gave a man 20 dollars on Atwater and Rice
Then, turned around and gave ‘em 10 more
Homeboys was lookin’ at me like I was slow
No Joke, my people, we need to help
How would you feel, if it was yourself?
Who’s gonna help?
